Types of Breast Implants

Saline Breast Implants
Filled with sterile salt water. In the rare event of rupture, the saline is safely absorbed by the body.
Silicone Breast Implants
Filled with cohesive silicone gel that feels more like natural breast tissue and maintains its shape well.

Breast Implant Placement Options

- Submuscular (under the muscle): Creates a more natural shape and may reduce the risk of capsular contracture
- Subglandular (above the muscle): Offers quicker recovery and may suit those with adequate natural breast tissue
- Dual Plane (partly under the muscle): Combines both techniques for enhanced contour and upper pole fullness — ideal for those with limited natural tissue

Incision Techniques for Implant Insertion
There are several approaches to inserting breast implants. Each is chosen carefully to suit your needs.
- Inframammary (under the breast fold): The most common method, allowing precise placement
- Periareolar (around the nipple): May suit those concerned about visible scarring
- Transaxillary (through the armpit): Avoids scarring on the breast itself

Your journey begins with a personal consultation at Aesthetica Image Centre in Armadale, Melbourne. At your initial consultation, we will:

Under current AHPRA guidelines for cosmetic surgery, a valid referral is required before your consultation, and a minimum seven-day cooling-off period applies between your consultation and booking a surgical date. As part of this process, all patients are screened for underlying psychological factors, including body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), to help ensure surgery is the right and safe choice for you.
Procedure Overview
Each breast augmentation procedure is performed at Chelsea Day Hospital or Cremorne Private Day Hospital. A typical procedure day may include:
- A pre-operative discussion confirming your treatment plan and any final questions
- Anaesthesia, as agreed during your consultation
- Your chosen incision, placement and implant approach carried out with care
- A period of monitoring in recovery before you're cleared to go home
- Most patients return home the same day, with a responsible adult to accompany them

Understanding Risks & Complications
All surgical procedures carry some risk. Potential complications of breast augmentation may include:
- Capsular contracture (scar tissue hardening)
- Implant rupture or leakage

Recovery After Breast Implants

- Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor healing
Most people return to light activities within 7–14 days, with final results becoming more noticeable over the following months.
