Non-Surgical TreatmentsThread Lift Melbourne — A Non-Surgical Face Lifting Option
Performed by Dr Tony Prochazka, Cosmetic Doctor. Dissolvable threads placed beneath the skin to provide mechanical lifting for selected patients with mild to moderate tissue laxity.
Thread Lift
A thread lift sits between non-surgical skin tightening and facelift surgery. May not be suitable if you need advanced structural correction, long-lasting comprehensive results, or no downtime at all.
At Aesthetica Image Centre in Armadale, Melbourne, we offer thread lift treatment as an option for selected patients seeking facial rejuvenation without facelift surgery.
Thread lifts may be considered for individuals experiencing mild to moderate tissue laxity who are exploring a lifting approach that sits between non-surgical skin tightening and surgical facelift procedures.
It is not a replacement for facelift surgery — but for the right candidate, it offers meaningful lifting with a shorter recovery.
If you're exploring your options, you may also wish to compare facelift surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation in detail.
What Is a Thread Lift?
A thread lift is a minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedure that uses dissolvable threads placed beneath the skin to provide support to selected areas of the face. This approach may be considered for patients with early to moderate tissue laxity seeking subtle lifting without facelift surgery.
Deciding whether a thread lift is the right choice for you depends on various factors, including your aesthetic goals, medical history, and expectations for the procedure. During your consultation, Dr Tony Prochazka will evaluate your concerns, answer any questions and guide you through the decision-making process with honesty and transparency. Your skin condition is also an important factor in determining whether a thread lift is the most suitable procedure for you.
Potential Benefits of a Thread Lift
- Minimally invasive approach
- No large surgical incisions
- May support subtle lifting in selected areas
- Can be considered for mild to moderate tissue laxity
- May suit patients not ready for facelift surgery
How a Thread Lift Works
Thread lifts use fine dissolvable threads to provide support to soft tissue in selected facial areas.
- Threads are placed beneath the skin in carefully selected positions
- This may provide mechanical support to areas of mild tissue descent
- The approach is designed for selected patients seeking modest lifting rather than more comprehensive repositioning
- Treatment planning depends on facial anatomy, degree of laxity and treatment goals
Who May Be Suitable for a Thread Lift?
- Are noticing early to moderate facial tissue laxity
- Would like to explore a lifting approach without facelift surgery
- Are seeking more support than skin tightening treatments alone
- Prefer a less invasive option where clinically appropriate
For more advanced skin laxity or structural facial ageing, a mini facelift or full facelift surgery may be more appropriate following consultation.
Where a Thread Lift Fits on the Spectrum
A thread lift is not the first step in facial rejuvenation, and it's not a replacement for facelift surgery. It occupies a specific — and genuinely useful — middle ground.
Patients who begin to notice skin laxity often start with energy-based treatments: radiofrequency skin tightening to support early firmness, or Ultherapy to address deeper tissue support. These treatments work well for the right candidate, but they don't provide mechanical lifting. When a patient wants more than energy-based treatments can deliver — but isn't yet at a stage where surgery is indicated, or prefers to avoid it — a thread lift may be considered.
Thread lifts use dissolvable sutures to provide physical support to areas of mild to moderate tissue descent. The result isn't the same as surgery, and it's important to have realistic expectations. However, for selected patients at the right stage, it can offer a meaningful step up in lifting that sits between non-surgical treatments and surgery.
Where tissue laxity has progressed a little further but is still earlier or more limited in scope, a mini facelift (MACS) may be a genuine surgical option worth discussing — smaller incisions and a shorter recovery than a full facelift, while actually repositioning tissue rather than just supporting it mechanically.
Where laxity is more advanced, or a patient has already explored non-surgical and minimally invasive options without achieving the result they want, full facelift surgery is likely the more appropriate conversation.

Thread Lift Compared with Other Treatment Options
| Treatment | Approach | Best For | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| RF Skin Tightening | Energy-based treatment | Early skin changes and texture | None |
| Ultherapy | Focused ultrasound | Mild to moderate laxity | Minimal |
| Thread Lift | Minimally invasive lifting | Selected cases of mild to moderate tissue laxity | Short recovery |
| Mini Facelift | Smaller-incision surgery | Earlier, more limited structural ageing | Around 1 week |
| Facelift Surgery | Surgical repositioning | Advanced structural ageing | Recovery required |

Frequently Asked Questions
No — a thread lift uses dissolvable sutures to provide mechanical support, but doesn't reposition the deeper structural layers of the face the way facelift surgery does. Results are generally more subtle and less long-lasting. Facelift surgery is typically more appropriate for more advanced tissue descent or visible jowling.
Patients noticing early to moderate facial tissue laxity, looking for a lifting option that sits between non-surgical skin tightening and facelift surgery. Not everyone who enquires will be a good candidate — in some cases Ultherapy, a mini facelift, or a full surgical consultation may be recommended instead.
A thread lift provides mechanical support without surgically repositioning tissue, while a mini facelift is genuine surgery that does reposition it. A thread lift suits patients wanting subtle lifting who prefer to avoid surgery entirely; a mini facelift suits those wanting a more comprehensive surgical result with a shorter recovery than a full facelift.
Generally shorter than facelift surgery, though some downtime should be expected. Swelling, bruising and tenderness are common in the first few days and usually settle within one to two weeks. Temporary puckering around thread entry points can occur initially and typically resolves as tissue settles.
Typically one to three years, depending on facial anatomy, skin quality and the natural progression of ageing. The dissolvable threads are gradually absorbed over several months, and also stimulate some collagen production that helps maintain support afterwards.
Generally $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the number of threads used, areas treated and treatment complexity. A detailed written cost estimate is provided following your consultation with Dr Prochazka. Thread lift procedures aren't covered by Medicare or private health insurance when performed for cosmetic reasons.
