Creating good skincare routine

Creating a Good
Skincare Routine

There is more to great skin than just genetics. Your daily skincare routine can have a huge influence on your skin health and how you age.
All our treatments are tailored to get results.
and are tailored for your concerns –
* acne
* pigmentation,
* skin hydration
* anti-ageing
* skin rejuvenation

However, as much as we deem ourselves to be able to work more than a few skin miracles in the clinic, it does take teamwork!
Your daily skincare routine is an integral part of that team. Effective and tailored skincare regime will boost and maintain the results we can achieve in the clinic.
Now, is an excellent time to focus on creating an effective daily skincare routine. While you are unable to come and see us, we are still here to help and advise you on skincare that keeps your skin looking great.
Where you buy your skincare matters
Skincare products that are one a size fit all, rarely work.
When choosing a skincare range our first port of call might be to visit an upmarket department store or cosmetics retailer to seek out the latest product an Instagram influencer swears by. Often in these stores we are left to our own devices and make decisions based on pretty packaging or what we hope to god, will create an overnight skin miracle for us.
Sure, these products smell delicious and feel nourishing. However, many of these products will merely treat the surface level of skin, such as dead skin cells.
Creating change starts deep beneath the surface. Because products sold over the counter are not prescribed or tailored to your specific skin concerns by a Doctor or skin professional it means the skin companies are restricted on the amounts of Active ingredients such as Retinols (Vit A), L-Ascorbic Acid (Vit C) and Niacinamide (Vit B) that they can sell over the counter.
For example, Companies will advertise a product as a Retinol serum, however the product may only include a very minuet percentage of Retinol that is inadequate to create change in the skin.
For the product to be useful for your skin it often needs to include a proper percentage of active ingredients and a delivery system. What is a delivery system we hear you say? If your serum does not have one it can mean that the molecule of the ingredients are too large to be absorbed to where it is needing to be delivered, therefore leaving the product on the skin’s surface, doing not much.
To avoid taking a risk on yet another product that doesn’t suit your skin or worse, create a reaction, your best option is to make an appointment with a Dermal Clinician, Cosmetic Doctor or Dermatologist. These professionals have studied the skin and have an excellent grasp of product ingredients, skin conditions and authorised to stock Skincare ranges with higher percentages of Active Ingredients.
Having a skincare routine is not dissimilar to exercising, you can’t tone up in a week just as you can’t solve years of skin problems with one bottle of serum. Many times, over the years we have received a common occurrence of a woman coming in saying “I’m in my 50’s and I want to do something for my skin, can you help? I’ve never done anything for my skin and don’t know where to start?”
Now, while we have been known to work some magic with skin, it is certainly trickier when someone hasn’t looked after their skin. Now we are not talking about doing monthly treatments for 30 years but, it is small things done over time that can make the most difference. Consistently using quality skincare can make the world of difference to how your skin ages and will reward you in years to come. However, remember, it is never too late to start making changes or using a skin care routine, as long as you do start.

Get to know your skin Type
All too often we consult with women who swear by a product they started using when they were in their 20’s and have remained loyal, however in there 30’s and 40’s it may not be doing any favours. There are many variables at play, hormones, age, diet or medications that can mean a product that works for one person could have adverse effects on another.
Remember that as your skin needs shift with age, so will your products. So, don’t be afraid to seek advice to switch it up and try something new.
Having a thorough skin consultation with a Dermal Clinician will help you discover if your skin is prone to being dry, oily, combination, sensitive or if there is any other underlying problems such as an impaired barrier, inflammation in the skin or even hormonal pigmentation.
A skin regime does not have to include an array of multiple products used morning and night. Your Dermal Clinician or Skin Specialist can help ascertain what product/products are essential for your skin type and concerns.
For instance, if you are suffering from severe skin breakouts you may have self-diagnosed your skin as ‘oily’ however, in most cases, breakouts and acne are more often than not be an indicator that your skin is dry. Your skin is working overtime to try and create sebum to hydrate the skin, which unfortunately comes in the form of breakouts. It may be the case of simplifying your routine to one or two products that are initially needed to help hydrate the skin and relieve the inflammation in the skin before adding anything else in the mix.

Learning how to apply your products (believe us this matters)
SOME ACTIVE SERUMS CAN INCLUDE INGREDIENTS THAT DO NOT COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER, CAUSE ADVERSE EFFECTS OR THEY NEED TO BE APPLIED SPECIFICALLY EITHER AM OR PM IF THEY ARE SUN-SENSITIVE. THE TRUE BEAUTY OF HAVING A PRESCRIBED SKINCARE RANGE IS THAT YOU WILL ONLY GET WHAT YOUR SKIN NEEDS AND THE CORRECT AND CONCISE WAY TO APPLY THEM FOR OPTIMAL RESULTS FOR YOUR SKIN.
WHEN YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THE CORRECT ORDER TO APPLY YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS, YOU CAN RUN INTO THREE PROBLEMS:
* THEY MAY NOT PENETRATE: THIS IS A PROBLEM IF YOU ARE PUTTING THIN, FLUID OR WATER-BASED PRODUCTS ON TOP OF THICK, CREAMY OR OILY ONES. THE RICHER PRODUCTS WILL FORM A BARRIER ON YOUR SKIN THAT PREVENTS ANYTHING ELSE FROM GETTING THROUGH.
* THEY MAY BE LESS EFFECTIVE: IF CERTAIN PRODUCTS AREN’T ABLE TO PENETRATE YOUR SKIN PROPERLY, YOU OBVIOUSLY CAN’T GET THEIR FULL BENEFITS. PLUS, WHEN CERTAIN ACTIVE INGREDIENTS ARE MEANT TO BE APPLIED AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, USING THEM TOGETHER CAN DEACTIVATE THEM OR EVEN CREATE A NEW, UNWANTED CHEMICAL REACTION. IN EITHER CASE, YOUR ROUTINE WON’T BE AS EFFECTIVE AS IT SHOULD BE.
* YOU COULD HARM YOUR SKIN: USING PRODUCTS OUT OF ORDER COULD EVEN CREATE NEW SKIN ISSUES. FOR EXAMPLE, APPLYING SERUMS ON TOP OF OILS COULD LEAVE YOUR SKIN DRY AND DEHYDRATED, SINCE NOT ENOUGH WATER IS REACHING YOUR SKIN. OR, IF YOU ARE LAYERING YOUR SERUMS, CREAMS AND OILS ON TOP OF YOUR MINERAL SUNSCREEN, YOU’LL BE DISTURBING THE COVERAGE AND DILUTING THE PROTECTION. THIS WILL LEAVE YOU MORE VULNERABLE TO SKIN CANCER AND PREMATURE AGING!
Generally, a skin care routine follows 4 steps
• Cleanse
• Active serum/s
• Moisturise
• SPF – rain or shine

Book an appointment with a Dermal Clinician
While booking an appointment to see a Dermal Clinician often elicits the fear of being sold thousands of dollars of products it is just not the case, in fact, it can probably save you money. Purchasing products on the fly in the mere hope it can solve our skins woes is all too common. Before long you are faced with a bathroom of half used cosmetics that are not right for your skin….and we have all been guilty of this.
